Stehekin Fjord Horses

Lake Chelan is often compared to the fjords of Norway. Perhaps this is why the Norwegian Fjord horse seems so at home here in Stehekin. Fjords first came to Stehekin in the early 1970s when Ray Courtney purchased six of them for use in his packing operation. They worked out so well that Ray’s son Cragg purchased a stallion and broodmares in 1980. The" herd now totals 20 with more on the way.

The Norwegian Fjord Horse is an all-purpose horse with an exceptionally high strength-to-size ratio. Though sturdy and muscular, the Fjord is extremely agile very sure-footed in all kinds of terrain, and possesses a fast, smooth trot. The versatility of the Norwegian Fjord Horse permits him to be used in nearly all categories of riding, packing or harness use. His long and close association with people sets him apart from other breeds. His gentle nature and friendliness are legendary. Every Norwegian Fjord Horse can be made a family pet, and at the same time remain attentive and alert, with an eagerness to work and expend his physical energies in any manner that might be required. He remains completely calm and gentle with only occasional use.

The history of the Norwegian Fjord Horse gives us evidence that the breed, as we know it today, was developed in the small, often isolated farms of Western Norway. On these farms a wide variety of uses, a very limited supply of livestock feed, and continuous close confinement and association with people made it necessary to develop a type of horse with characteristics much different from that of other breeds of horse. The nature of the area insured almost total isolation of the horses of Western Norway from all other breeds. This isolation made it possible to maintain purity of the Fjord Horse breed for a long period of time. It is probable that maintaining purity of the breed aided greatly the selection and development of the characteristics of the Fjord Horse we find so desirable today. The unique nature of the area and the special requirements of the farmers, resulted in a small horse breed of exceptional purity, strength and hardiness, with an extremely gentle nature and temperament.

Fjords are right at home in the mountains and seem to love getting into the high country. They are "easy-keepers" so thrive in the hills as well as on winter pasture. They seem to be born "naturally broke" which coupled with their gentle nature and general willingness makes training an easy task. During the summer months you can see some of the young Fjords corralled on Cragg Courtney's home place about two miles from Stehekin Landing. You may see some of the ones used as pack stock in the pasture at Cascade Corrals when they are not off on a trip to the high country.
